What to do. Catch the Dolmus to Kaya, or walk there if you are energetic
This is an agricultural area and also home to the famous Ghost Village, where Greek Christians used to live, in harmony with their Turkish neighbours until 1923 when at the end of a war, the Greeks and Turks agreed a population exchange and the Greeks had to leave suddenly and were taken to Greece, with the Turks in Greece and Bulgaria were brought back to Turkey. This village is rumoured to be the setting and theme of Bird Without Wings by Louis De Bernieres, who has been a regular visitor to the area. The village was to a great degree brought to ruins in the earthquake of 1957 but, enough still stands to be able to imagine how the people lived at that time, there are churches with lovely arching and the town has now been named a Unesco world friendship and peace village. It was also used as a setting in the film The Water Diviner starring Russell Crowe.
Also in Kaya are some barbecue restaurants where you order your meat and basically have to cook it yourself. But, the barbecue is brought to your table lit and ready to cook, your salads and bread are given to you and your choice of meze and tandir which is a very very slowly cooked meat dish.
Or you could go to a more traditional restaurant some with swimming pools, one or two with camels or just have a gozleme (a type of pancake) from one of the ladies selling them from her stall.
We even have the odd cottage for sale in Kaya Village Ref V139 £190,000
From Kaya, if you are energetic and like a good walk, it is possible to walk from the Ghost Town to OluDeniz.
There is also a beach past Kaya, which the dolmus will take you to, Gemiler Beach, this is well worth a visit, the water is clear, the views stupendous.
